Have you been considering veneers? If you are, you might be surprised to find out that they may take a while for you to adjust to the veneers fully. While they should never hurt or feel uncomfortable, veneers may feel a little odd for some time as you adjust to having a new smile. In this article, we’re going to talk about veneers and how you can get used to them. Keep reading to learn more!
What Are Veneers?
As Healthline puts it, “Veneers are thin shells that fit over the front of your existing teeth to improve their appearance.” Veneers are an excellent option for those struggling with tooth discoloration or who have chipped or cracked teeth. Since the veneer goes over the natural tooth, it won’t help with the straightening of the teeth; however, many people get veneers in an effort to achieve their dream smile.
WebMD tells us that Veneers come in two different types of material. Composite veneers are made from resin that is dyed to look like natural teeth. Veneers made out of porcelain are also made available by many dentists and can create a more natural appearance. If you’re considering veneers, talk with your dentist to fully understand which option is best for you.
Adjusting to Veneers
Since something new has been placed over the tooth, it may feel a little off. For the most part, there is no honest answer as to how long it will take for you to fully adjust to them since it’s mostly a mental game. A few things that will impact your adjustment period includes:
- Size
- Placement
- Positioning
- Material of the veneer
Additionally, some dental patients may feel gum tenderness after their veneers are placed. If that’s the case with you, you can brush and floss your teeth gently until the tenderness resolves itself. A warm salt water rinse can also be an excellent solution for alleviating gum tenderness.
Pro Tips for a Fast Adjustment
While you should be able to function with veneers just as you would with natural teeth, the adjustment period can take some time and patience. Here are some tips that will be extremely helpful when you’re getting used to your veneers:
- Use toothpaste that’s made for sensitive teeth and gums.
- Avoid hot and cold temperature drinks for the first few days.
- Avoid hard and crunchy foods while you’re adjusting (chips, hard candy, etc.).
- Avoid extremely chewy foods (gum, gummy candy, etc.).
- Use a straw when drinking, so the liquid doesn’t touch your teeth.
- Most importantly, if you’re experiencing discomfort and pain, call your dentist.
